There can be numerous combinations formed in a horoscope which can help in predicting progeny of the native. Every combination has a different effect and even for different horoscopes, the effects can be different based on other factors such as shad bal, i.e , the strength possessed by any planet to give the resultant effect, position of other planets, visions (Drishti) of planets, degrees of placement, etc. These combinations are said to be benefic if they give good results and malefic, if the resultant is unfavorable. Some of such combinations are enlisted here:
1. The Jupiter's natal sign falling in the 5th of the annual and occupied by the year lord Mars or Mercury, indicates birth of a son.
2. Jupiter in the 5th or the 11th houses promises birth of a son or comforts through children. The Sun, Mars and Mercury in these houses also give progeny.
3. The natal signs of Jupiter, Venus and Mercury falling in the ascendant of the annual chart also promise progeny.
4. Progeny is promised when a strong lagan lord and 5th lord conjoin in the 5th, or an exalted Moon, Jupiter or Venus occupies the 5th, or a strong Venus as 5th lord in the natal falls in the 5th of the annual chart and also establishes Ithashala with the Lagnesha.
5. Jupiter as the lord of the Putra Saham and located in the 5th, promises the birth of a son.
6. Putra Saham located in the 5th house indicates progeny.
7. When Jupiter, the karaka for progeny, is badly afflicted, there shall be worries related to progeny.
8. Affliction to one's son occurs if the sign of natal Saturn falls in the fifth house and is inimically aspected by a malefic.
9. Retrograde Mars in the 5th indicates the death of a son.
10. The natal sign of the Saturn or Mars falling in the annual ascendant indicates affliction to progeny.
11. Afflicted Mars, Saturn or weak Moon in houses 5th and 11th shall produce adverse results regarding progeny.
